    Workload Bulletin 28 November 2011

Are vacant positions not being filled in your area? Are you taking on the workload of a vacant position? Do you believe your workload has increased? Are you working unpaid overtime?

The CPSU has had a number of enquiries from staff who are concerned that vacant positions in their workplaces are not being filled. Instead, they, and other staff, are expected to take on the work of the vacated positions.

This has led to work overload and increasing workplace stress. The CPSU has been told that staff are not taking their lunch and tea breaks, working unpaid overtime on weekends and in the evening, not accessing time off in lieu, or annual and sick leave in order to complete their work.

What can you do if this is happening in your workplace?

Clause 66 General Staff Workloads of the UNE General Staff Agreement 2009-2012 must be adhered to.

If a position is vacated and not filled a Workplace Change must take place in accordance with clause 32 of the agreement.

Don't accept an extra workload without proper procedures taking place.

Contact the CPSU, get some advice.

Your Workplace Agreement was negotiated by the CPSU to ensure that your workplace conditions are fair and equitable, and you have adequate breaks and are paid for the work you do.

If you or other staff take on extra workloads and do the work of vacated positions things will remain the same. Work overload will continue, and the University will not fill vacant positions.

With the unknown effect trimesters will have on your current workloads it is important that all vacant positions are filled. If there are any vacant positions in your work area that have not been filled please let us know.

If you are finding it difficult to access leave and breaks or are working extra hours without pay, tell us: we can help you.
