PSA exposes preparation of prisons for privatisation

PSA exposes preparation of prisons for privatisation

March 17, 2009
On Sunday night under the cover of darkness, the Department of Corrective Services trucked around 107 prisoners out of Cessnock jail. Staff were stood aside, and when the next shift arrived in the morning they found themselves locked out. When they were finally allowed in, they found evidence of a shambolic late night raid, including missing paperwork on the whereabouts of prisoners. This is a clear move to downsize and prepare the prisons for privatisation.

The time to raise our voice against privatisation is now.

There is one action we urgently need you to take - can you tell 10 of your friends to sign the petition? You can use our form here

The media have reported that the Corrective Services Department's reasoning for the midnight eviction was to reduce the prison's population to prepare it for privatisation later this year. It is now clearer than ever that the Government doesn't care about the results of their own Prison Privatisation Inquiry, about the submissions from nearly 500 of you, or about an open and democratic process.

When we deliver your petition we want to be able to tell the Government they have a fight on their hands.

Tell your friends now or simply forward the email below.

Thanks and we will keep you posted with any further developments.

Regards,
John Cahill,
PSA General Secretary

P.S As soon as we heard, the PSA urgently headed to Cessnock to find out the real story. We raced back to Sydney to tell the media all about it - you can check out our video here
