Award Modernisation should not cut Award Standards

Today CPSU, the General Staff Union, told the Australian Industrial Relations Commission, in our submission regarding the Higher Education Industry - General Staff - Modern Award, to keep the better pre-existing condtions in the current State Awards.

The CPSU has strongly urged the Commission to preserve the 35 hour working week for General Staff in NSW and the 36.25 hour week for General Staff in Queensland.

We also demanded the retention of better sick leave conditions for General Staff in NSW. General Staff in NSW accrue more days per year.

We have pressed for General Staff to be paid higher duties allowances after one week. The Draft Modern Award proposes a 2 week minimum period.

"The CPSU will continue to fight to defend the best possible Award condtions for General Staff and to fight to impove on them in Enterprise Bargaining" said David Carey, Federal Secretary of the CPSU.
