CPSU Wins Improved Defence Reserves Leave
The CPSU, The General Staff Union @ UNSW, has been negotiating with the University for the new UNSW General Staff Enterprise Agreement, expected to be finalised this year.
While negotiations are continuing, the CPSU has won in principle agreement for an improved Defence Forces Leave clause.
On top of current Defence Forces Leave provisions, the HR Director may approve Additional Defence Leave if UNSW is eligible to receive the Federal Government’s Employer Support Payment Scheme (ESP Scheme).
Approval will likely be contingent on your local work unit approval & if the ESP Scheme fully compensates the University for the General Staff member. This may include the 25% on-costs the University factors into staff budgets.
The current funding provided to employers through the ESP Scheme is $1183.10 per week.
For a Level 3 General Staff member, the ESP Scheme would currently fully compensate 100% of Additional Defence Leave required.
For a Level 8 General Staff member, the ESP Scheme would compensation 50% Additional Defence Leave and 50% Leave Without Pay.
For example, an application for 4 weeks Additional Defence Leave and 4 weeks of Leave Without Pay would result UNSW being funded by the ESP Scheme for 8 weeks, enough to cover both salary & on-costs.
The Additional Defence Leave Clause is:
“The University will consider on a case-by-case basis an application submitted by an employee for paid leave in addition to the provisions … above where the University is reimbursed for the employee’s absence through a scheme funded by the Commonwealth Government.”
